If you would like to expert to Excel/Pdf/Html programmatically you can read chapter 3 from our Developer's Guide. You can find there several examples how to export manually to any of the available exports.
About the speed of the export to Excel, we can tell that we are entirely dependent on the performance of the PIAs provided by MS. There is one thing that can be done to improve the speed a little bit and this is to stop the visual styles from exporting to Excel, by unchecking the option 'Export visual styles'.
